At one point in the BBC production of Casanova, the Italian ladies’ man jokes with his latest paramour that his surname translates as “lucky b*stard.” The real-life Giacomo Casanova claimed to have slept with 122 women and four men. Such a vivid life has sparked any number of dramatizations, including this three-part miniseries from the BBC (shown in the US courtesy of Masterpiece Theater) .

An inquisitive serving girl, Edith (Rose Byrne) takes an interest in the venerable man, and he begins telling her about his adventures. The story shifts encourage and forth between the display and the past; in brief vignettes, viewers search for young Giacomo’s childhood and adolescence, his education and sexual awakening. Finally, “Jack” reaches young adulthood; David Tennant takes over the lead, and the fun really begins.

The chronicle is glorious powerful a dramatic fabrication, although some details are true (e.g., Casanova’s dauntless prison rush), and considerable of it comes off like an eighteenth century “Procure Me if You Can.” Casanova has no money or location or space, so he gets by with a combination of intelligence, wit, trickery, and of course, sex appeal. Before long, he’s hobnobbing with the Venetian upper-crust and later traversing half of Europe, bedding one woman after another. But the trusty worship of his life is a spicy young beauty named Henriettte, who naturally is engaged to Casanova’s arch-rival, Grimani. Remarkable of Casanova’s schemes and exploits over the course of the film revolve around him trying to muster the resources to gather Henriette away from his enemy.

Its cornerstone is a tight, focused script (by Russell T Davies), crackling with witty dialogue. The memoir spools out at a safe stagger, and most of the characters are reasonably well-developed. As one might seek information from, there’s a lot of bawdy sexual humor, but none of it is overdone. Casanova’s worship for Henriette gives the epic a solid dramatic anchor and lends sympathy to a character who otherwise would seem like a shallow womanizer. The older Casanova’s narration provides both framework and perspective, and in a nice touch, his tale is quiet unfolding in the exhibit even as he recounts his past. The direction (by Sheree Folkson) is generally crisp and effective, though there are some distracting gimmicky effects, making generous spend of visuals and character reactions.

The tone really helps to sell this production–it’s lighthearted, romantic, dramatic, and poignant in exactly the lawful spots, taking itself seriously enough without taking itself too seriously. It also helps that the characters all feel very rooted in the culture and values of their times, and the script doesn’t skittish away from brutal realities, including untimely death, barbaric executions, the rigid social structures imposed by money and area, and the cramped options available to women.

Visually, Casanova is a sumptuous treat, with enough status work to sustain it from feeling set-bound. The interiors are attractive, and the costumes are fairly eye-popping, with nice shifts in color schemes as the yarn switches from one region to the next. Despite the quality and the lavish attention to detail, however, the production peaceful looks cheap by American standards–colorful and over-the-top, but false. Oddly, this amateur-theatrical quality is share of the series’ charm, and it even provides some self-deprecating humor (e.g., an piquant galleon bobbing across an old contrivance indicates a sea voyage) . The accumulate is spotty: satisfactory in some places, wincingly synth-pop in others.

The production’s other gigantic strength is the performances of the cast. O’Toole hits all the factual notes as the older Casanova, looking relieve on his life with a mixture of nostalgia, pride, wound, and regret. Remarkably, the seventy-something actor conveys a staunch sense of sex appeal, and his chemistry with the grand younger Byrne is profitable. But the film belongs to Tennant, who gets the bigger chunk of conceal time and brings exactly the factual combination of cheeky confidence and lovelorn vulnerability to the younger Jack. The character’s over-the-top behavior would be injurious in lesser hands, but Tennant’s nicely controlled performance keeps the viewers’ sympathy with Casanova at all times. Tennant also does helpful work “aging” the character over the course of twenty years, as time, exhaustion, and disappointment all consume their toll. His silly timing is wonderful–a couple of scenes are screamingly laughable (Casanova goes to confession, literally giving the priest a coronary), and Tennant’s delivery of lines like, “I’m the Italian with the wh*re!” are spot-on perfect.

O’Toole and Tennant are supported by a sizable and mostly able extended cast. Particularly impressive is Shaun Parkes as Casanova’s sidekick/ manservant Rocco: the two allotment some hilarious banter and have mountainous chemistry together. Also strong is Nina Sosanya as Casanova’s second major treasure interest, a singer named Bellino: she’s a accurate presence, despite relatively tiny hide time. Byrne does safe work as the challenging and compassionate Edith. Perhaps the biggest surprise is Rupert Penry-Jones as Casanova’s rival Grimani: the character starts off as a pompous, rich boor, but layers are revealed as the epic unfolds, building up to an emotionally remarkable scene that Penry-Jones plays to aching perfection. Probably the weakest link in the cast is Laura Fraser as Henriette–she doesn’t say remarkable depth to the worship of Casanova’s life, making it hard to swallow that he’d go to such lengths for her. Given the scores of women literally throwing themselves at him, Henriette really needed to be a compelling presence, and she’s not all that different from his other paramours. It doesn’t abet that Fraser’s repertoire consists of a single facial expression, which starts off charming but starts to grate very mercurial. She’s not terrible–she has a wonderfully amusing scene where Henriette and Jack communicate by imprint language across a crowded ballroom–but in such an outstanding cast, she gets lost.

Overall, Casanova is a fun, intellectual romp, with distinguished to recommend it. It’s to the series’ credit that the nearly three-hour running time goes by very lickety-split. I strongly recommend the DVD release over the edited version PBS is showing. Yes, the sex is fairly raunchy and leaves minute to the imagination, but it also provides noteworthy of the story’s humor, and one crucial exchange between Grimani and Casanova feels, well, neutered with so many dirty words lop out. The production has its campy moments, and some may win it too over-the-top, but underneath the trappings is a fairly classic adore chronicle with a lot of heart.

Casanova is one of the funniest offerings on Masterpiece Theater in years. A dramatization of the life of the notorious rogue Giacomo Casanova, it is station in Europe during the eighteenth century at the height of the Enlightenment. Casanova was a nobody who frail his sterling looks, charm, and intellect (all three of which were noteworthy) to create fortunes, lose fortunes, circulate in the highest social circles, sink to the lowest prison, and have a stout time doing it. At the same time he seems to have had a generous sense of compassion and a kind heart which endeared him to many.

I have no concept how accurately this film renders Casanova’s staunch life. I do know that the script is witty and the actors radiant (I particularly enjoyed Casanova’s many asides) . I also loved the incompatibility between Casanova’s riotous early years and his dim retirement as a librarian, telling his record to a young woman who is appalled by his excesses, attracted by his charm, and finally becomes his last friend and ally. I enjoyed the disconnect between Casanova’s constant womanizing and his unfulfilled care for for Bellino and especially Henriette, who becomes a sort of guardian angel, pulling him out of some of his worst predicaments without his having a clue. I also enjoyed the “unique” music scores and dancing, which enhance rather than distract from the epic, especially the “ball” at the French court, which is hysterical!

If you are only familiar with this production as it was shown on Masterpiece Theater, be forewarned that this is the novel uncut British offering, with plenty of sexual acrobatics (and some killingly comic scenes poking fun at England and the English! I can’t imagine why the Masterpiece Theater people crop those parts out!)

Kevin Smith is the director behind five of my favorite movies. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back were all created as a part of Kevin’s “New Jersey Chronicles,” in which each of the afformentioned movies had recurring characters from the previous films. Each film is laced with witty dialogue and even some serious messages mixed in.

On this DVD, Kevin talks about anything and everything ranging from the failed documentary with Prince to a soft-core porn involving Jason Mewes, who is known to all as Jay in the “New Jersey” movies. Kevin’s most interesting topic was the controversey surrounding “Dogma.” Kevin talks about the death threats he recieved, his Catholic up-bringing and about the time he picketted at his own movie. However, nothing is as amusing as the story behind his failed attempt to revive the Superman movie franchise. Kevin talks about his meetings with Warner Bros. executives and the producer at the time who had some unusual requests as to what he wanted included in the script.

All and all, if you are a fan of the Kevin Smith movies, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this DVD. If you have not seen any of Kevin’s movies, you owe it to yourself to buy every single one of them and then to buy this.

I recently saw El Topo at the IFC Theater in NYC, and the restoration was beautiful. This film has only been available in North America in bootleg form, and these bootlegs ran from from passable to abominable. My personal copy was a VHS dub of a Japanese laserdisc, which had the film optically censored (you can’t show pubic hair in Japan, but just about everything else), Japanese subtitles, and it was dubbed in English (it is supposed to be in Spanish). Now we will get it as the great Alejandro meant it to be seen. This film is really astounding at times, considering Jodorowsky was mainly known as a theater director, and he had only directed one previous feature (the little seen and frequently banned Fando y Lis). His films have a truly hallucinatory quality that is magnificent to behold. This was reportedly John and Yoko’s favorite movie. They recommended that Allen Klein pick up the rights to it, and he did. Allen and Alejandro have been feuding for the last 30 years over this film and who owns the rights, but luckily, they’ve made peace (let’s hope it stays that way). El Topo, along with The Holy Mountain, are Jodorowsky’s best films. Many thanks to ABKCO films for finally releasing this masterpiece.

Just to let you know, the above is a review of El Topo. This review is also appearing for some reason under the box set of The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky. The box set is magnificent, by the way…

El Topo is the classic Mexican film hailed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono enough that it was shown at midnight in many cinemas for years. It is often credited as starting the midnight movie countercultural that helped bring attention to, and build cult film audiences for movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and David Lynch’s Eraserhead. In that respect it is far from a mainstream film but it got enough attention that it is celebrated even today. I feel that this is with good reason, as El Topo is one of best films ever made. Alejandro Jodorowsky directs and stars as the title character.

El Topo begins with its eponymous character in the desert with his son. He tells the boy to bury a picture of his mother and his toy in the sand as now it is time for him to become a man. The boy is vulnerable but El Topo leads him by example while protecting him in their various interactions with others. The film understands the western genre and the machismo that often accompanies it. El Topo is one bad cowboy who can guarantee protection for anyone he cares about. So it really sucks when he soon leaves his son behind with a bunch of monks after emasculating some evil banditos. He leaves with a girl he saved and he names her Mara. Mara loves El Topo for being the alpha male that he is, so she convinces him to kill the four best gunslingers so he can be baddest cowboy of them all. He manages to defeat them in various significant ways. These scenes are rich in biblical and other religious references and operate allegorically to show that being a bad cowboy isn’t really all it’s cracked up to be. Nevertheless, for better or worse, El Topo kills all four of them and begins to learn four specific lessons along the way. He begins to feel guilty and while he is caught off guard during the beginning stages of his enlightenment, he is defeated by the unknown woman who followed El Topo and Mara during their journey. Viewing El Topo as vulnerable, Mara betrays him and leaves with this unknown woman gunslinger. El Topo’s battered and shot up body is taken away to a cave by a multitude of unseemly characters.

Macrocosmically, the journey for El Topo overall suggests that his travels represent the rise and trials of Judeo-Christian theologies, with the son representing new Judeo-Christianity and El Topo representing the old philosphies. The second half of the film seems to comment on more contemporary dealings and even anticipates what will happen in the future. How will El Topo’s son grow? How will he react to the father who abandoned him but who has himself grown? How will the dominant faith evolve? How will it maintain its truth and purity with humanity at the wheel?

In the literal sense, the second half of El Topo forwards to a few years later after he is brought to a cave by this band of deformed pariahs. When he wakes up we soon realize that El Topo is a different man. He shaves off his beard and head and dresses as a monk. He makes a plan to free these people from their cave so they can join the community outside. He plans to fund the building of a tunnel to free these people. He does this by going to the town with his dwarven girlfriend to entertain them with comedy and dancing, among other small jobs. The town itself is by no means a utopia as it is wrought with slavery and violence. A new priest at the church in town is revealed to be El Topo’s own son who he abandoned years earlier. El Topo’s son plans to kill him but he decides not to do so until the tunnel is complete. The tunnel gets finished and El Topo’s son decides not to kill him. Meanwhile, the deformed people are free and as they head to the town the villagers there begin to shoot and kill all of them, to El Topo’s dismay. El Topo unleashes his vengeance on the villagers, killing them all and in the process freeing their slaves. El Topo then lights himself on fire, which was a timely parallel to the Buddhist monks who did the same in protest of the Vietnam War. During his death, El Topo’s new son is born to his dwarven girlfriend. If the Buddhist references are consistent then this would suggest that El Topo is reincarnated as his own son and religious truth will continue to surface again.

I think it is important to note that the content in El Topo could be perceived as both perplexing and offensive to many movie-goers. Alejandro Jodorowsky kills real animals, uses real deformed and dwarfed people, and liberally applies nudity and violence throughout. It doesn’t offend me at all but I knew my wife wouldn’t like it and I understand why, so I mention it here just in case.

El Topo is a complex story with many odd details as well as many religious references and metaphors that comment on a larger scale as I noted earlier. I’ve seen it many times and in my first few viewings I didn’t understand it and thought it was entertaining but pretentious. It is not pretentious. Microcosmically, El Topo is a film about a human being finding himself, and finding out all alone what it means to be alive. It is about independently becoming a good man as a good man is defined in the eyes of Alejandro Jodorowsky. It is obviously a deeply personal film for its director and it may not touch on elements personal to everyone in its audience, but it definitely did for me. Jodorowsky invokes religious references as a vehicle to express his own torments and challenges and how the enlightment experience for El Topo is merely mirroring his own experiences. It’s commentary addresses oceans of issues in many layers. Conjuring up the imagination to produce this web of ideas so alive is indeed an ambitious undertaking. I find El Topo to be profoundly inspiring in a way that few films are. Its significance alone should at least justify one viewing for you and I hope you get the same satisfaction that I did. Perhaps you will like it enough to enjoy El Topo again and again.

I’ve taken a strong interest in serious DVDs recently, and have a list of serious DVD’s that I recommend. This is one of two 9/11 DVDs that I am reviewing, the other, is Aftermath, Unanswered Questions from 9/11.

I have five pages of notes. A few key aspects of the film:

1) Over and over, Bush, Cheney, and Rice seen as liars and hypocrites simply by playing their past statements on television against reality.

2) Movie opens with the wall of notes and photos of the missing–for those that don’t get out to see the real world; this is precisely the kind of wall that appears in areas devastated by genocide or a major natural disaster.

3) The movie speaks of the 2 hour delay in getting fighters up, and appears completely unfamiliar with “Crossing the Rubicon” which documents the anti-terrorism exercise being played out that day with Dick Cheney in charge. My bottom line: the entire cover up is about protecting Dick Cheney from being derelict in both ignoring terrorism and intelligence from day one, and possibly being malignantly culpable in using his operational control of the government (including the President’s movements) to *allow* 9/11 to happen as a pretext for war.

4) The 4 widowed mothers, the Jersey Girls, are compelling in indicting the Attorney General and the FBI for grotesque ineffectiveness and inattention, to include constantly changing the FBI people assigned to the 9/11 investigation.

5) The widows are compelling in suggesting that the incompetence of the Bush-Cheney Administration is a great threat than terrorism The reality is that the Bush-Cheney Administration is *very* competent at pursuing its own malignant objectives against the public interest.

6) The movie does well at documenting how no skyscraper has ever fallen to fire, in showing how both towers came down perfectly as if by planned pre-placed demolitions, and how WTC 7 (the home of the Secret Service and the CIA) also game down perfectly despite not being hit. I am not a fan of conspiracy theories, often suggesting that given a choice go with incompetence over conspiracy, but I do believe that Dick Cheney in particular has lied to the public, to the 9/11 Commission, to Congress, and that he must be held accountable.

7) Republicans spent 100 million according to the movie (I remember only 50 million) on investigating Clinton-Lewinsky, and assigned only 3 million, later grudgingly raised to 14 million, to the 9/11 investigation. That says it all.

Paul Thompson is the real hero of this story, and his TIMELINE, which I have reviewed, is superb. See also my reviews of “Fog Facts” and “Lost History.”

9) The movie excels at documenting all the warnings received by the US from specific governments at specific times, contrasting that with the televised lies by Condi Rice and Dick Cheney, as well as “deer in the headlights” views of George Junior. The movie overlooks the two walk-ins to the FBI, one in Newark and one in Orlando, prior to 9/11.

10) The July 2001 G-8 summit, and Bush’s vacation home, had anti-aircraft defenses for the first time in history. At the same time John Ashcroft stopped flying commercial and on 9/11 a number of senior Pentagon people cancelled trips planned for that day. I have “LIARS” written in all caps three times at this point in my notes.

11) The most compelling point made by the movie is that if the government had shared this information with the public, then all three planes might have been protected by the passengers, as was the case with the third–passengers armed with knowledge did what the Pentagon and White House could not or would not do.

12) Sy Hersh’s work is featured, and overall this movie suggests that the Taliban was created by the Pakistani intelligence service, and that Bush is a real hypocrite for honoring Pakistan while declaring war on all those who support and harbor terrorists. Hello? The money trail clearly connects Al Qaeda and Pakistan, in sharp contrast to the lies told about Al Qaeda and Iraq.

13) The movie ends very powerfully, first with a total condemnation of the corporate media that “went along” and would not even run BBC stories by Greg Pabst, stifling both dissent and investigative journalism.

14) Bottom line: they all lied, now we need to know WHY they lied. 9-11 is the biggest don’t ask don’t tell in history, with no answers, no accountability.

These four widows, and honorable people like Sy Hersh, Paul Thompson, and Greg Palast, deserve respect from all of us–they are doing precisely what Thomas Jefferson would have wanted them to do, saying as he did, “A Nation’s best defense is an educated citizenry.” In my view, terrorism is the least of our problems. The capture of the federal government by corporations is the real enemy.

Edit of 16 Oct 06: View this with “Loose Change” (second edition) which is unfortunately not sold via Amazon.

This movie is to 9/11 what the BBC’s “The Men Who Killed Kennedy” series was to JFK–that is, after you see it, you will never again believe the “official” story about what happened. You will be left with question after question after question.

Forget fringe movies like “Loose Change,” which undercut their own message by jumping to conclusions and engaging in wild, baseless speculation in many scenes.

This movie puts the 9/11 Timeline to devastating use, completely blowing out of the water the idea that we had no real warnings prior to 9/11. It also shows what a sham the 9/11 commission was–a modern day Warren Commission–and you’ll be floored when you see who was put in charge of it (remember the original choice? That’s right: Henry Kissinger).

The reason this movie works so well is that it doesn’t ask and answer questions for you, as “Loose Change” did–just lays everything out right in front of you, and you will be floored.

Easily without a doubt the golden standard movie for all those who are interested in the REAL story of what happened on 9/11.

You will never be more distrustful of government, after watching this.

If you have bought “Recess: Miracle on Third Street” and/or “Recess: All Growed Down” and wondered what was up with the whole flashback thing…and why Disney is giving substandard and disappointing DVDs..

It’s because usually Disney gives any cartoon series a 65 production limit (even if it’s a huge sucess [like Recess] or a horrible failure) but since Recess was SO popular Disney hesitantly accepted for 13 new episodes to be made and they are being put into DVDs or they were shown after the Recess: School’s Out movie (I think only 4 were shown on TV: Terrifying Tales of Recess, Lost Leader, Kurst the Not So Bad, and Mundy, Mundy) Sadly instead of Disney continuing to make NEW episodes, that still has a potential gold mine of profit, Disney believes that kids won’t know any better and believe showing the same 65 episodes again for syndication will make them think it’s still new. But my younger cousins (8-12 years old), and I know other kids are smarter than that…and can tell what are reruns..

But back to the DVD, this DVD like the other 2 I mentioned earlier are loosely held together, but thankfully this time ALL OF THESE episodes are never before seen. There are three new episodes where TJ stands up against school changes, the gang discover a 5th/6th grade club under the jungle gym, and when Spinelli thinks she is too old for Halloween (this episode is great for kids around 10 who are questioning whether celebrating Halloween is childish or not).

The DVD contains two bonus TV series premiere episodes: The Break In, and the New Kid.

TJ, his gang, and the school are not the only things that have changed! The original voice actors for TJ and Mikey are different since the original actors’ voices had become too deep. (Their voices are OK, and you’ll notice the change but the spunk in TJ’s voice is kind of gone.) If you are hoping for any type of dialogue or conflict with the Ashleys, Gelman, Hustler Kid, or any other kid characters…there are very little.

If you are worried about the characters not remembering their last year experiences…don’t worry they do and the dialogue shows that.

This DVD is announced as the final chapter to the Recess series, and I find it as a hollow disappointing finale (considering it’s supposed to be the finale.) I was expecting something grand, exciting, and momunmental like the Recess: School’s Out movie but the three stories seemed average and kind of flat.

(I thought a proper finale would have been when the gang was leaving Third Street [ending 6th grade] since they would be leaving the school they had so many adventures in, they would be going to a new school, and that Recess would never be the same since they are going into middle school.)

The “luster” of these stories in the 5th grade DVD are dulled somewhat by making the gang’s experiences more average or ordinary [like a regular, real world school] compared to the TV series.

If you are huge Recess fan, I’m sure you’ll want this to catch up on your favorite characters but don’t hold your expectations too high like I did.

It’s rumored that there is another DVD in August of 2004 called “Recess: First Day of School”…Hmmm I wonder what that’s about if this 5th grade DVD is the finale?

Anyway, it’s kind of sad that Disney is throwing away such high-rated, award winning, and huge profit making cartoon. It’s still remarkable that it’s still airing on network television since fall of 1997, but ever since 2001…it’s now just showing reruns.

I guess all good things have to come to an end, it’s just too bad that it had to end in a small solitary “kazooing” blow (you know those blowing toys the kids make noise with)…

Recess Taking The Fifth Grade is awesome.This video movie is based on the Recess series and theatrical movie. This review contains spoilers. This movie isn’t just one story it’s three stories into one movie about T.J and his gangs’ misadventures in fifth grade. In the first story T.J and his gang go to their first day in fifth grade expecting it to be the best first day ever, but instead they find out thatMiss Finster is the new teacher. The food is disgusting,and the playground gets taken away from everyone in the school. T.J makes a protest to make everything back to normal. Mr White makes an unexpected appearance,but don’t worry it has a good ending. In the second story the gang goes to meet the new king Larry of the playground, who T.J thinks will give him a reward for the protest, but instead shows the gang to the secret fifth and six graders club. But when the gang finds out Mikey and Gus are making fun of the little kids the gang decides unexpectantly to ask a kid to help them stop. The old king Bob of the playground makes an appearence. In the third story it’s Halloween and Spinnelli is thinking she’s to old for Halloween. It will take the gang and a little help from Mrs Finster to help Spinelli have the Halloween spirit. This movie is awesome and as a treat the D.V.D has the first two episodes of the show. Everone in the movie, including Robert Goullet as principal Prickly, do a great job.This movie has plenty of laughs and fun. If your a fan get it!

Was told about this demonstrate by a work collegue who said he nearly wet himself with laughter watching the reveal. Once my wife and i started watching we were crooked!!As soon as the fourth season had finished we came on here and bought all the dvd’s as you cannot procure them in England as it is only shown on sky tv channel paramount. Our dvd’s should be here soon and the sooner the better!! The best episodes were ‘mans gotta eat’ where randy returns to the streets as smokey to fund his cheeseburger habit, and ‘propane, propane’ where Mr. Layhey looses it and tries to extinguish ricky. Everybody should look trailer park boys as it is so amusing but it does recall a few episodes to really regain into it. We are busy converting everybody we know into TPB addicts and as soon as our dvd’s come by here we are locking all our friends in our front room and watching all of them on our 42′ wide cloak tv. No one is leaving until they are crooked too!!! Win THEM ALL!!!

If you are a red blooded male you will like this series. When I bought this area I was a diminutive jumpy because I had not heard anything about it. However, after the first couple of episodes, which effect the storyline, this reveal starts to really grasp up the scuttle, and it never slows down. If you have enjoyed series like Rurouni Kenshin and Outlaw Star then you’ll care for this, as it is, in my concept a combination of the two at least with regard to the themes it has. For fans of shonen anime with memoir battles and famous lessons, the Dusky Cat box state is a must study.

I honest got this a couple of days ago from SunCoast and have found myself to be astounded by this ample series the area you read from Amazon gives some info but more of the storyline is that Convey Heartnet an assassin for the mysterious Chronos group who give him assignments to ruin off anyone they survey as an atrocious influence on the world than a Sweeper(Bounty Hunter for an easy description) by the name of Saya starts awakening his lost humanity and compassion this starts him questioning the missions that Chronos has him do.The final share is a job he has to do demolish the bio-weapon EVE that they perceive as a threat to humanity but Instruct instead lets her live an decides to leave Chronos for proper along the procedure he joins Sven Volfield another sweeper Sven who has also decided during one of his missions to protect Eve.There is of course more to the series but you will have to explore that for yourself what I found spellbinding is the thought

I first saw “Amadeus” around 1984 when it was first released. Besides being a visual and musical masterpiece of film making, it kick-started my life-long fancy of and appreciation for classical music.I won’t uncover the fable synopsis as it’s already been thoroughly described both by Amazon.com’s significant review and multiple customers here already. I will say though that this edition, ‘The Directors Cut’, is a major improvement over the first DVD release. First, (and finally!!), the movie is now a single-side DVD…gone is the annoying 2 sided ‘flipper’ that the first release was. You can now gape “Amadeus” from launch to enact without having to win up and turn it over. Click HereSecondly, ‘The Directors Cut’ now adds about 20-30 minutes of previously deleted scenes, placed serve into where they were originally intended. I won’t give away any details, but there is a novel scene between Mozart’s wife, Constanza, and Salieri, Mozart’s chief musical rival (and secret arch-enemy) early in the movie that puts an whole modern perspective of Salieri’s bent and battered psyche.As for the DVD itself, the record and sound quality are both exemplary. Included is a second disk with bonus material including interviews and making-of extras.If you loved the unique, you owe it to yourself to take up this version. If you’re original to classical music and Mozart, this is the best plot to originate.

If you’re a fan of the modern theatrical sever of “Amadeus” you’ll have mixed feelings about the “Director’s Nick”. While I perfer the latter for a number of reasons, the feeling and tear of the modern theatrical version differs somewhat from the “Director’s Crop”. The most principal fraction are extended scenes that include Salieri agreeing to encourage Constanze if she has an affair with him. He ends up rejecting her when she shows that she so loves her husband that she would be willing to do so. A number of the opera scenes are extended as well with more business after the present between Mozart and his leading lady. There’s also a longer sequence piquant Salieri’s visit to Mozart comissioning the “Requiem”. Most of the material adds to the power of the film while a few sequences unprejudiced give additional attend memoir on various characters. The unique theatrical version which won an 8 Oscars runs about 25 minutes shorter than the 3 hour “Director’s Reduce”. Forman also provide a inspiring commentary track for the film along with writer Peter Shaffer (”Equus”) .

The image quality for the “Director’s Sever” is valid to the recent theatrical version. The film was restored to its modern luster for re-release resulting in remarkable more natural flesh tones and a sharper visual image as well. The colors which play in notable fraction in conveying the themes of each sequence are more robust and brilliant. The theatrical version looks quite obedient although it was first issued on DVD as a “flipper” (meaning you had to flip it over) DVD after roughly two hours to sight the last third of the movie. The huge advantage for the theatrical version is Neville Mariner’s win on an isolated track.

The second disc of the “Director’s Gash” has one terrific extra, a brief talent list and the fresh theatrical trailer. The righteous behind-the-scenes documentary covers the highlights and difficulties that Forman faced in translating Shaffer’s stage play to the conceal. At nearly 40 minutes it could have provided more background including outtakes, rehearsals and auditions but it’s quite a few documentary as it is. There was plenty of room on the second disc to include Mariner’s isolated earn but the documentary is really all we gain.

As to which is better–it’s a toss up. Both versions of the film work extremely well although I occupy the “Director’s Chop” for the added footage, the sharper more robust image quality and the higher definintion anamorphic transfer. I do miss the isolated Marriner catch of Mozart’s music that appeared on the unusual disc in 5.1. Given the capacity of the second disc, it could easily have been transferred and would have added value to this special edition.

A epic of envy, lust and infuriate “Amadeus” focuses on the brief life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart (Oscar nominee Tom Hulce giving a terrific performance) was a child prodigy who peaceful his first portion at the age of 4 and produced a remarkably substantial body of work for such a brief life. His nemesis is court composer Antonio Salieri (Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham in a powerful performance) . This is really Salieri’s myth as his jealousy drives him to raze Mozart. Salieri is so consumed with his jealousy, that while recognizing the beauty and originality of Mozart’s music, he can’t benefit but want to ruin its creator. Salieri’s quaint compositions can’t absorb a candle to Mozart’s complex, modern and intellectual pieces.

Featuring inspired supporting performances by Christine Ebersole, Jeffrey Jones, Simon Callow (”Three Weddings and a Funeral”), the only performer that doesn’t do anything for me is Elizabeth Berridge as Constanze. She replaced Meg Tilly unbiased prior to shooting. The magnificent production build, cinematography and animated direction produce “Amadeus: The Director’s Gash” an experience worth savoring. This deluxe edition features a running commentary by director Milos Forman, writer Peter Shaffer (”Equus”), a stout 30 itsy-bitsy documentary on the making of the movie and a terrific 5.1 Dolby Digital remastered soundtrack. Restored from the fresh film elements, the film hasn’t looked this robust and intellectual in quite some time. The digital anamorphic transfer looks superior and almost rich enough to eat. This version doesn’t replace the current theatrical version but is more of an enhanced experience for those who loved the first film. Since this version runs roughly three hours, be prepared for a long evening.

Highly recommended, this examination of the destructive power of jealousy detached resonates with power, passion and astonishing music. If you’re not an opera buff, I’d suggest skipping this for, while the film is considerable, portion of the power comes from appreciating the music that Mozart wrote. We glimpse a lot of excerpts from a variety of Mozart’s operas throughout the movie. Whichever version of the movie you resolve, you’ll distinct to be contented. I’d give the “Director’s Carve” a petite edge for better narrate.
